Surgery's done. Here's the honest update.

By Erica Bermudez, OTR/L — pelvic floor occupational therapist

Surgery's done. I'm home, moving slow, and honestly — I don't have some big lesson wrapped up in a bow for you yet.

I keep waiting for the profound moment. The one where getting cut open teaches me something I can package into a neat takeaway. It hasn't shown up. Mostly I've just been lying on the couch, forgetting my own advice about breathing, and reminding myself every few hours that resting is doing something, even when it doesn't feel like it.

If you've ever felt guilty for resting — for taking a day off exercise, canceling plans, or just not being productive while your body heals — that's the only lesson I've got so far. You're allowed to just be recovering. You don't need to be learning something from it in real time. You don't need to find the silver lining on day three.

Sometimes the work is just letting your body do its thing while you get out of its way.

That's where I'm at. Still stitched up, still human, still figuring it out one nap at a time.

P.S. I'm sharing honest bits from recovery on Instagram and TikTok — not the highlight reel, the real one. Follow along if you want the behind-the-scenes.
